Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) is constructing one of Europe’s most technologically advanced automated MRFs. The facility uses some of the latest sorting equipment and will have a throughput capacity of 90,000 tonnes of dry recyclables, including plastics, per year, together with a further 90,000 tonnes of waste via transfer activities.

The flexibility of the MRF design will allow for improved efficiency of recyclables handling, including the separation of plastic bottles by polymer and colour if required, maximising the value of the sorted material. This will be particularly good news for local authorities within the Norfolk region running plastic bottles into the MRF who will have the opportunity to maximise material separation from co-mingled collections, take advantage of the reduced operational and transport costs presented through the local siting of the MRF and secure high end-market value for their material.
