The Warrington Compaction Bank Trial scheme has seen participation improve by 30% since the scheme first started in June 2002.

This month, the people of Warrington recycled their 1 millionth plastic bottle, which equates to 50 tonnes of collected material. The scheme has allowed Warrington residents to release space in the regular bin and reduce the amount of material being sent to landfill.

The scheme is a partnership between Recoup and Warrington Borough Council, using a new type of collection bank that allows users to compact the bottles at the point of deposit. The potential benefit of this approach is that it will increase the capacity of the banks and enhance the economics of recycling bottles through lower servicing charges.
