Collecting recyclable materials from flats has long proved a puzzle for local authorities. New research into the scale and scope for the development of recycling schemes to serve such properties has now been completed and published by DEFRA.

The research, carried out by Waste Watch and the Safe Neighbourhood Unit, provides case studies of recycling schemes in housing estates, high-rise blocks and areas of high-density housing - all areas that have previously proved difficult to tackle. The report provides information on the resources available, funding and issues surrounding planning and resident engagement.

The provision of such information will help local authorities with responsibility for areas of such dense population to effectively evaluate the potential and practicalities of integrating plastic bottle collections into their household recycling schemes.

Copies of the report are available from DEFRA
