New research undertaken by Recoup, in partnership with Valpak and funded by WRAP, shows that the collection and recycling of plastic bottles has continued to increase compared to 2007 figures.
92% of local authorities now offer collection facilities, according to the findings of the Local Authority Plastics Collection Survey 2008.
The results also indicate that UK collections are now performing at a rate of nearly 182,000 tonnes per annum, which equates to 4,525 million plastic bottles. To put this increase into context, nearly 35% of bottles in the household waste stream are now being collected for recycling whereas in 2001 this figure was just 3%.
The research also found that 23% of local authorities offered some form of collection for other household plastics, such as carrier bags and food tubs and trays.
