Plastics market update

As the year draws to a close, there has been only a slight improvement in the export market for used mixed baled plastics.

Sharp falls in the value of virgin polymers and reduced demand from overseas markets knocked down prices in the autumn which had been high during the summer. Even higher quality materials, baled by polymer type, saw their value fall to around a third of their summer rate by November. The prices have now started to stabilise generally, and end markets are still available for good quality materials, however the general consensus from the industry is that the markets are unlikely to start recovering until at least Q2 2009.
